NITRIC ACID PRODUCTION

Basic materials of Nitric Acid are Ammonia and Air. Ammonia Oxidation by air occurs in gas phase and continues passing through Platinum catalyst, applying the technology process of DM Weatherly (USA).

AMMONIUM NITRATE (AN) PRODUCTION

Basic materials of AN are Ammonia and Nitric Acid (NA) which react in a pipe reactor producing Ammonium Nitrate with concentration of ± 85%, using Kaltenbach Thuring (France) technology process.

ASSEMBLY

PT. MNK cooperates with PT. Dyno Nobel Australia, an established company which also the inventor of explosive materials specially used in mining around the world.

Non Electrical Detonator (Nonel) Assembling Plant was built at Muara Kembang, Muara Jawa, Handil, in East Kalimantan. Nonel is used either for Surface or Underground Mining, such as gold, nickel, coal, and other minerals mining.

Nonel Assembling plant will be operated in 2012 and for the first step the plant will produce about 2.5 million pieces per year and will increase the production up to 6 million pieces per year.

Types of Nonel that will be produced are:

• EZTL Nonel, is the series of low power surface detonator. It is combined with the Nonel MS serial to provide a flexible, easy to use surface initiation system in mining and construction application.

• Nonel MS Series, is a milliseconds, power of high delay detonator, performs 28 delay series in range of 25 – 1.000 millisecond.

• Nonel LP, is a non-electrical delay detonator. LP unit consists of a yellow long shock tube with the high power detonator that sticks at one edge and at another sealed edge.

EMULSION

Emulsion is an explosive material made from liquid phase oxide mixed with oil phase (diesel or diesel oil) added by emulsifier to stabilize the emulsion phase. Glass micro-balloons or chemical gassing agent is used for spreading agent in order to create a hot spot atmosphere because the granular oxidizing is very small, which is about 0.001 mm.

Currently, the using of explosive emulsion is going wider in various mineral mining, either in cartridge or in a Mobile Mixer Unit (MMU) truck to the explosion hole.

To fulfill this, starting from May 2009, PT. MNK has succeeded producing the first commercial emulsion “On Site Plant (OSP)” located in Indomuro with the production capacity of 1.260 MT/Year.

Quality Control

To keep the quality of the products, a periodical laboratory test should absolutely be made. PT. MNK also uses a computerized control device system (Distribution Control System, DCS) in order to reach a highly valid accuracy data and to control all process.

Cooperation with recognized institutions such as Mineral Technology Development Centre (PPTM), Bandung and Sucofindo, Jakarta, is intended to counter-check quality test results of the production.
